(Vienna, 23 April 2025) – The ÖBB Rail Cargo Group (RCG) is extending its existing TransFER Salzburg–Augsburg to Ulm once a week and will therefore operate three round trips per week instead of the previous two. The extension strengthens the connection between southern Germany and RCG's international TransNET and improves conventional wagonload transport for customers from a wide range of industries. This not only promotes the flow of goods between the two regions, but also strengthens the logistics chains of numerous companies in Central and South-East Europe. Hazardous goods transport in accordance with RID can also be handled.

Direct connection from Salzburg via Augsburg to Ulm
Goods from all over Austria reach Salzburg via antenna connections on the railway, where the train formation for the TransFER takes place. The main route runs from there to Augsburg and Ulm and also offers a continuous connection to Salzburg in the opposite direction. In Ulm, goods can either be distributed directly to customers with a connecting railway or - if there is no industrial siding - delivered and collected via the nearby transhipment hub in Ummendorf.

Ummendorf transhipment hub: efficient goods handling and flexible distribution
The hub in Ummendorf is optimised for switching between rail and road. A wide variety of goods - with the exception of containers and logs - are handled efficiently on around 2,000 metres of track. Handling takes place both under cover and in open areas. In addition, special handling is possible for paper rolls, heavy plates and coils, among other things. Storage takes place on an area of around 5,000 square metres. Additional truck transport is available for the first and last mile, enabling seamless collection and delivery to the end customer. This creates a particularly flexible and customised solution: while customers with an industrial siding can be supplied directly via Ulm, the Ummendorf hub handles distribution for companies without a direct rail connection.
