(Vienna, 11 December 2022) - On 11 December 2022, the first Nightjet to Genova celebrated its premiere. At 7:18 p.m., the premiere train set off from Vienna Central Station towards Italy and was given a ceremonial send-off by Climate Protection Minister Leonore Gewessler, Italian Ambassador Stefano Beltrame and ÖBB CEO Andreas Matthä. In cooperation with Trenitalia, ÖBB now offers the night train connection from Vienna, Salzburg and Munich directly to the Italian Riviera. NJ 233 and NJ 40295 have been extended from Milan for this purpose and will in future travel daily to Genova and on to La Spezia.
"With the new night train, we are connecting cities such as Vienna, Munich, Milan and Genoa overnight in a climate-friendly way - and thus making rail travel even more attractive compared to air travel. Because those who choose to travel by train are around 50 times more climate-friendly and reach their destination well-rested and relaxed. The new, ultra-modern Nightjets will offer even more comfort and privacy in the future. I am very pleased about the cross-border direct connection, which shows that we take climate protection seriously - and are investing in the mobility of the future," says Climate Protection and Transport Minister Leonore Gewessler.
"2023 will be a real 'Italy year' for ÖBB: Italy is the most popular holiday destination for Austrians and we will make sure that it can also be reached in a climate-friendly way. With the extension of the Nightjet to Genoa and La Spezia, we are taking the next step towards making the night train network in Europe even larger. With Liguria and the Cinque Terre region, we are offering our customers new attractive Nightjet destinations that they can reach comfortably and in a climate-friendly way overnight," emphasises ÖBB CEO Andreas Matthä.
