ÖBB and Siemens Mobility present the interiors of the Nightjets of the new generations ÖBB and Siemens Mobility present the latest generation of Nightjet couchette and sleeping car at the Siemens Mobility plant in Vienna Simmering. The new carriages are tailored to the needs of today’s passengers and offer modern design, enhanced comfort and more privacy. A total of 33 ÖBB Nightjets of the new generation will be in use by the end of 2025, linking European cities up on overnight trips in a climate-friendly manner at speeds of up to 230 km/h. The first trains should be used by the end of summer 2023 on popular routes to Italy from both Austria and Germany. “Night trains are becoming increasingly common in Europe as a climate-friendly alternative to short-haul flights. The state-of-the-art Nightjet from the ÖBB means travelling to cities like Rome, Venice or Milan is much easier and more comfortable. Choosing the night train is the most relaxing form of travel whilst also playing an important contribution in reducing CO2 emissions. A trip with the Nightjet is around 50 times more climate-friendly than travelling with an aeroplane”, explains Climate Protection Minister Leonore Gewessler. “Night trains have become synonymous with sustainable travelling, and our Nightjet is synonymous with night trains across Europe. Comfort, modern design and greater privacy are all increasingly important for our passengers. ÖBB is investing in 33 completely new Nightjet trains for exactly this reason. The interiors in the Nightjets of the new generation will provide passengers with a completely new travelling experience. This train is the start of a new era in night-time travel”, enthuses ÖBB CEO Andreas Matthä. Albrecht Neumann, CEO Rolling Stock at Siemens Mobility: “The new Nightjet is an important part of making rail travel more attractive whilst also achieving climate targets. The trains are exceptionally innovative - they will be a benchmark for years and set standards for passenger comfort, sustainability and flexibility. The innovative Mini Cabins are a particular highlight of the interior, and they grant passengers a place for privacy. Newly developed bogies have a lightweight construction and ensure a particularly quiet journey whilst providing convenient, efficient operations over the entire life cycle.” Nightjet of the new generation in use in Europe 33 Nightjets of the new generation are being built at the Siemens Mobility plant in Vienna Simmering. The first trains should be used by the end of summer 2023 on routes to Italy - they will be used on connections from Vienna and Munich to Rome, Venice and Milan. To this end, a total of 33 new Nightjets will be in service in Austria, Germany, Italy, Switzerland and the Netherlands by 2025, replacing a large proportion of existing rolling stock. New levels of comfort in night train travel The Nightjet of the new generation consist of seven carriages: two seat cars (control wagon & multi-function wagon), three couchettes and two sleeping cars. Total maximum capacity for each one is 254 seats. Ultra-modern design meets even greater comfort and even more space. Lower occupancy levels (compartments for 2 in the sleeping car, compartments for 4 in the couchette) and the new Mini Cabins for solo travellers enable the ÖBB to satisfy passenger demands for greater privacy. Travelling is even more comfortable in the sleeping car as all compartments are fitted with their own toilet and shower facilities. Rigid installed beds improve comfort when sleeping, ensuring a relaxed and well-rested arrival. They also have a comfortable seating area for relaxed working, reading or eating when travelling. The new Mini Cabins, which are sleeping areas for solo travellers in the couchette, are compact and have everything a passenger needs for an undisturbed and pleasant journey: a storage area, an adjustable folding table for breakfast which also has an integrated mirror, clothes hooks, a reading lamp, and an adjacent locker for luggage. The multi-function wagon will provide new, improved transport options in the future: 6 bicycle storage spaces for all cycling enthusiasts as well as more space for luggage as well as skiing and snowboard equipment. Every new Nightjet will also feature a modern couchette compartment with disabled access and a disabled toilet that can be reached with low-floor boarding. Technical innovations & features Passengers can look forward to a variety of technical innovations. A new feature is free on-board Wi-Fi. That service was previously limited to Railjets on long-distance routes as well as the couchettes comfort on Nightjets, but it will now also be available to those travelling on the new generation of night trains. Those who want to keep amused until they reach their destination can surf free of charge on the ÖBB Railnet onboard portal, and use it to stream as well as read a range of digital newspapers and magazines. A modern passenger information system is integrated in all carriages, helping ensure that passengers are kept aware with up-to-date travel information. Alongside conventional plug sockets, the new Nightjet also provides USB charging options and an inductive charging station for a wide range of electronic devices. New window panes that enable better reception improve network function and provide a more stable connection for mobile phones. Compartments also feature a control panel with various comfort features, such as light control and call for service staff on board. In addition, the compartments are fitted with an electronic access system using NFC cards and all carriages have video surveillance to further improve safety.
